The Historic Millennium Center
The building was originally constructed in 1906 to be used as the City of Winston Post Office. In 1914 the city of Winston and Salem joined together to become Winston-Salem. The building was expanded and became the US Federal Building for the region. It housed the United States Post Office, US Federal Court, US Attorney, FBI, US Marshal, Military enlistment offices and the IRS. In 1937 it was expanded again to accommodate the growing City. It functioned in this way until 1992 when it was abandoned and all operations moved to the outskirts of Downtown.
The building was purchased in 1994 by Gregory Carlyle the founder of The Millennium Group Inc. He has spent the last 20 years restoring the building to its original grandeur and converted it into a Nationally known special event center. It has three levels that include The Millennium Ballroom and Grand Lobby, The Speakeasy and Garden Room on the lower level and the Historic Courtroom, Grand Jury room and FBI Offices on the upper level. The Millennium Ballroom previously served as a sorting room for the Post Office with massive machines and rolling carts, but now is an elegant serene space with beautiful chandeliers, giant window casements and maple hardwood floors. Stunning weddings, elegant social galas and corporate events are held here often. On the upper level, the Grand Jury room and FBI offices have become a space used for receptions, art shows, meetings, and other celebrations. The Historic Courtroom is often used for elegant dinners, wedding ceremonies and intimate gatherings. The lower level is used for celebrations and thematic events. The original holding cells now have intimate seating evoking the Speakeasy era.
The building has been the location for many films such as Leatherheads starring George Clooney and Renee Zellweger, House of Cards with Kathleen Turner and Tommy Lee Jones and the academy award winning short film, Two Soldiers. In addition major musical stars and celebrities have performed and appeared here: Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Robert Cray, George Clinton, John Mayer, Matchbox 20, Alice in Chains, Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelo, Jack Nicholson and many more.
